Balboa Park Alive! is a series of immersive and interactive phone-based installations in Augmented Reality (AR) exploring biodiversity in the San Diego/Tijuana region. This application combines tools such as Niantic Lightship ARDK, Mapbox, and mobile hand tracking, opening new possibilities for situated learning and for what is described here as embodied visualization. This concept encompasses forms of visualization whose meaning pivots on the enactment of the relational structure represented in the depiction. For example, users navigate to the Zoro Garden by interpreting the continuous waggle dance of a virtual bee above their palm and walking in the direction it signals.  As mobile, location-based AR becomes increasingly feasible to implement, it is argued that embodied modes of visualization offer valuable opportunities, particularly for children, to increase engagement with complex conceptual content.
